“Maria” Kinematographer Edward Lachman won the feature Film price at the 39th annual ASC AwardsFebruary 23 at Beverly Hilton. His surprise win beat Oscar -Favorites “Dune: Part two” (Greig phrases) and “The brutalist” (lol crawley), as well “Nosferatu” (Jarin Blaschke), “Conclave” (Stéphane Fontaine), “A Completely Unknown” (Phedon Papamichael) and “Wicked” (Alice Brooks). The extended list was due to how close the proportion of voting was.
This marks Lachman’s first victory after five nominations on ASC Awards. He was previously nominated for his work with Todd Haynes on “Mildred Pierce”, “Far from Heaven” and “Carol”, as well as his previous effort with Pablo Larraín, “El Conde.” His other project with the Chilean filmmaker, “Maria”, follows the last days of opera singer Maria Callas as she reflects on her life and the struggle to maintain her own voice. It acts as a culmination of Larraín’s “Important Women” trilogy, the other two films “Jackie” and “Spencer.” To tell this story, which extends over several decades and places, Lachman used Kodak film in 35 mm, 16mm and Super 8, which shoots on both color and black and white layer.
On TV Page, American Society of Cinematographers assigned Robert Elswit in the category with a limited series for “Ripley,” Richard Rutkowski in the half-hour episodic category of “Sugar” and Sam McMurdy in an hour’s episodic category for “Shōgun”, while “Gaucho Gaucho” and “313” took the documentary and music video categories.

At the same time, the Spotlight Award went to Jomo Fray for “Nickel Boys”, Ramell Ross’ best image-nominated historical drama about two African American boys sent to an abusive reform school in the 60s Florida. This was a great weekend for Fray, which also won the best Film art at the Spirit Awards.
“The approach to” nickel boys “involved us to read much of the traditional methods of filmmaking,” Fray told IndieWire. “Ramell and I used the term POV as a short hand, but I think we really were after an image with a sensitivity to the image that had real bodily efforts linked to it. We wanted to try to create an image that was hyper-subjective and engrossing for the audience. “
